As part of the digitalization program, Rosseti plans to install 22 million smart meters of electricity, said company head Pavel Livinsky at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The head of state held a working meeting with Livinsky on Friday; a transcript of the conversation was published on the Kremlin’s website. During the conversation, Livinsky said that at the end of 2018 the concept of digitalization of the company was approved.
“First of all, this is the development of smart metering (electricity – ed.). We put serious emphasis on this, without this we don’t have to fully talk about any digital transformation. Nearly 22 million metering devices, which we will have to install at our own expense at the borders with our consumers, “- said Livinsky.
According to him, at the same time a “huge order” for the domestic industry may be formed. Rosseti has already held meetings with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, enterprises of the military-industrial complex. Livinsky explained that “it is possible to make a domestic chip on such an anchor order, the component base for metering devices.”

“We separately emphasize, Vladimir Vladimirovich, on the development of operational-technological management systems. Of course, the Russian network complex will have a high level of reliability and invulnerability when (modern) domestic modern systems emerge. I undertake to develop such a system within three years. For us it is fundamentally important that the machine must control, eliminate the human factor, so that a person intervenes only by deviations, “said Livinsky.

In December, Putin signed a law on the introduction of smart electricity metering systems in the Russian Federation. Such systems include, in particular, “smart meters” that can remotely transmit indicators, and various sensors that monitor the operation of power grids. According to the law, from July 1, 2020, obligations for electricity metering in apartment buildings are assigned to guaranteed suppliers (these are the main energy supply companies of the regions), and for other consumers – to power grid companies. If they do not provide accounting using smart meters, they will be fined from 2023. Costs for “meters” will be included in the rates.
